The crane actually lifts the blocks and drops them into the ship, which kept my four-year-old busy for a solid hour. I like that it hooks up to our other track sets too, so the cargo can travel from the train right onto the water.

My kid likes connecting the cargo ship to his other train sets, and the four blocks store right on deck so nothing gets lost. The crane arm, though, pops off its base almost every time he cranks it up, which gets frustrating fast. It's fine for the price, just not as sturdy as I hoped.
